We announced in 2019 that we would be migrating all classic. Available on mobile, web, desktop and in your Gmail account. Use Google chat to message a person or group. Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat were rebranded to Google Meet and Google Chat in April 2020. Google Hangouts has been upgraded to Google Chat. Important: These steps work only on school-managed Chromebooks running Chrome OS. Or, set different rules for students in certain groups.

However, we encourage users who wish to keep a copy of their Hangouts data to use Google Takeout to download their data before Hangouts is no longer available in November 2022 by following these instructions. You can block students from using Google Chat on their school-managed Chromebooks. Users will see an in-product notice at least a month before Hangouts on the web starts redirecting to Chat on the web.įor most people, conversations are automatically migrated from Hangouts to Chat, so it’s easy to pick up where you left off. While we encourage everyone to make the switch to Chat, Hangouts on the web will continue to be available until later this year. In July, people who use Hangouts in Gmail on the web will be upgraded to Chat in Gmail.

Similarly, people who use the Hangouts Chrome extension will be asked to move to Chat on the web or install the Chat web app.

You can learn more about Chat and classic Hangouts interoperability. This means that messages sent in these spaces will only appear in Google Chat for your affected users. First, starting today, people using Hangouts on mobile will see an in-app screen asking them to move to Chat in Gmail or the Chat app. However, starting mid-March 2022, any newly created spaces in Google Chat within your domain will not appear in classic Hangouts.
